Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa L. Hemp has had an historical presence in our history. It was used to make a wide number of items. Yes, HEMP IS CANNABIS!!!! it has low THC and high CBD. Hemp was used in 2000 B.C. in China and Japan in 8000 B.C.. Historians have confirmed the use of hemp for fiber, shelter, and food by ancient civilizations. The worth of hemp was recognized early. Peak hemp production in the United States was in the mid-1800s with spikes during both World Wars. Industrial hemp production was most common in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Early to mid-1900s cotton and later synthetic fibers led to the decline in hemp demand and production.
Government legislation like the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act and the 1970 Controlled Substances Act created legal challenges for this plant. Hemp became a victim from the War on Drugs. The War on Drugs misled people about hemp and cannabis, and they were lumped into one plant. They are related plants, but not the same.
The 2018 Farm Bill authorized the production of hemp and removed hemp and hemp seeds from the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA)schedule of Controlled Substances. 115th Congress - H.R. 5485 “(1) HEMP.—The term ‘hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis." According to A Practical and Natural Taxonomy for Cannabis by Arthur, Ernest Small and Arthur Cronquist, "It will be noted that we arbitrarily adopt a concentration of 0.3% delta 9 THC (dry weight basis) in young, vigorous leaves of relatively mature plants as a guide to discriminating two classes of plants." Hemp is legalized in thirty-seven (37) states and the District of Columbia for medicinal qualities.
Hemp has a wide range of uses in the industrial and consumer market. It can simply be a protein, food, or a natural muscle relaxer. Hemp when it is used for all of its abilities, can be part of foundations of various building materials, flooring, and textiles. Hemp is used for animals for medicinal applications like arthritis. Hemp is a natural way to remediate soil. It may be Cannabis, but it has many uses, and the many uses which make it VALUABLE!
At Citadelle Green Mountain, we are excited about the potential impact industrial hemp will have in our daily lives. This is a revolution of change and evolution of a natural resource. It is sustainable and has so many benefits. This will be an important year for farmers as the September 2024 Farm Bill is currently underway. Let's climb this mountain!
